Dear Ms Merriman:
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) would like to request a
Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) be prepared for [he Yelm High School Addition.
The existing Yelm High School generates a significant amount of traffic during its peak
hour. Currently [here is a westbound SR SIO left turn lane a[ the westerly main access to
the high school buI no channelization at the easterly access R appears from the Notice
of Application that was sent [o us [hat the main student parking access (i.e. the higher
volume access) will be relocated to the cas[edy access. As a result, we have concerns
that [his non-channelized access may not function adequately unless SR 510 highway
improvements are constructed.
The TIA should review and make recommendations, if any, for both accesses to the high
srheol. hnprovements the TIA should consider are whether wes'thound SR S101eft !urn
channelization at each access is warranted, or if a Two Way Left Turn Lane that includes
both accesses would possibly be a better solution. The need for eastbound right turn
channelization to both accesses should also be reviewed. Once we receive the TIA we
will then be able to make our recommendations as [o what state highway improvements,
if any, will be required for [he school addition project.
