Thurston Highlands
Attn: Grant Beck
Grant Beck, Community Development Director
Subject: Thurston Highlands EIS
In light of today's economy, I find it appalling that Yelm would
consider promoting a new
almost 1 million sq. ft. shopping center near the area called Thurston
Highlands.
In addition to the U.S. economic outlook, I am protesting the
implementation of the
Thurston Highlands EIS because it is not consistent with the
Comprehensive Plan.
It definitely goes against the communitiy's wishes.
In addition, the water usage has not been sufficiently researched to
allow a
large commercial center as well as the completion of Thurston Highlands.
The water usage affects outlying areas, and not only the City of Yelm.
I note that Yelm has over-budgeted projects. Is the city biting off more
than
it can come through with?
Have you been to the Lowes Shopping Center at the corner of College St.
and
Yelm Highway in Lacey? It is a ghost shopping center with Lowes being
the
only occupant.
Go to the Internet and Google vacant shopping centers all over the
country and you will read that
there are many vacancies due to stores closing. Starbucks has closed
over 600 of its stores. Yes, the Yelm Starbucks has just opened, but I
doubt if it will last.
In addition, the housing market is sinking more and more. Do you want a
glut of empty new houses? It isn't going to get better. There are more
bankruptcies in the offing.
Instead of a grandiose expansion for Yelm, why not take care of
unfinished projects such as the by-pass first? How long do you think
fitness and fast foods are going to last when many people are out of
work, gas prices almost out of reach? People are beginning to use
their spending dollars more on food on the table and gas in their cars.
Again, I protest vehemently the Thurston Highlands EIS.
