TheAmerex KPautomatic restaurant fire suppression system
protects the hood, duct and appliances.
In either automatic or manual actuation the system works in this manner; •~
1. When a fire starts, the detection network, con-
sisting of fusible links or pneumatic tubing, will
automatically detect the fire or the manual pull
station can be used, releasing a low pH agent
throughout the hood, duct and onto the appli-
ances.
2. Either method of actuation will interrupt gas or
electrical power to the appliances preceding
system discharge.
3. The Amerex KP agent quickly suppresses the
fire and cools the fuel while securing the
vapors with a smothering foam reaction.

The combination of the Amerex KP system and an Amerex Model B260 or
B262 Wet Chemical extinguisher provides restaurants with a "ONE-TWO"
attack against the threat of business loss due to cooking operation fires.
KITCHEN GAS APPLIANCES PROTECTED BY:
AMEREX KP RESTAURANT FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM
SPECIFICATIONS
GENERAL;
The Amerex KP Restaurant System is apre-engineered, wet
chemical, ston:~d-pressure type with a fixed nozzle agent disiri-
butlon network. The system is listed by Underwriter's Labora-
tories, inc., ULC and tested ro U.L Standard 300. The system
shall be designed, installed and maintained In accordance with:
Amerex Part No. 12385 "Design, Installation and Maintenance
Manual", N.F.P.A. 96, N.F.P.A. 17A, local codes and ordinances
by an Authorized Amerex KP Systems Distributor using fac-
tory trained personnel.
AGENT;
The system agent is Amerex KP liquid fire suppressant, a po-
tassium acetate based solution that suppresses cooking grease
tires both through saponification and cooling. The agent has a
pH of 9 or less and does not Kann stainless steel surfaces.
AGENT CYL/NDER :
The agent cylinder is a mild steel DOT 4BW 240 specification
cylinder, tested to 480 PSI (3309 kPa). The agent cylinder/dls-
charge valve assembty is fully factory charged with Amerex KP
liquid agent and pressurized to 240 PSI (1655 kPa).
DETECT/ON:
The d~etec[ion network uses a continuous cable run with dVetec-
tors specifically listed for use with the Amerex KP System. No
"S" hooks are allowed.
ACTUAT/ON CYL/NDER:
The actuation cylinder is filled with 10 cu. in. of nitrogen and
has an Integral pressure gauge which allows easy field verifi-
cation of pressure. This cylinder is capable of being refilled in
the field by an Authorized Amerex KP Systems Distributor.
AGENT CYL/NDER BRACKET:
The agent cylinder bracket is steel, painted red, with a factory
supplied discharge hose and pipe outlet or discharge fit-
ting.
STA/NLESS STEEL CAB/NET (Options/J:
An optional stainless steel cabinet housing an MRM and one
agent cylino@r is available. The pressure gauges for the nitrogen
cylk~der and the agent cylinder are visible without removing the
lnvnf cover of the cabinet.
D/SCHARGE NOZZLES:
Discharge noales are made of chrome plated brass, and shall
consist of a body, strainer, tip, retaining nut and blow off cap.
MANUAL PULL STAT/ONS:
The manual pull s~tions area `dual action" type. Both a ring pin
and lever must be pulled in order ro discharge the system
manuaNy.
MECHAN/CAL RELEASE MOoDULE (MRMJ:
The mechanical reAsase module Js the spring-loaded type using a
mechanical input and electrical, mechanical or pneumatic out-
puts. n is capable o/ achrating from one b ten cytinder/va/we as-
semblies using one nfbngen cylinder and is operated either auto-
maticalty by the deter.-tion network or manually by a remote manual
pull station.
The MRM enclosure, available in either stainless steel a red
painted steel has a system status indicator and a window to
observe the nitrogen cylinder pressure. The enclosure has pro-
visions for applying tamper seals after final testing or periodic
maintenance. The MRM enclosure has knockouts on three sides
(top, bottom & right) to accept conduit. The MRM has one SPDT
micro switch pre-installed.
PNEUMAT/C RELEASE MODULE (PRMJ:
The PRM offers superior detection by using a linear pneumatic
detection system. The PRM detection system consists of the PRM,
tubing and end of line fitting. The tubing is pressurised tlvough a
small `accumulator" inside the er-clasure, routed tlxoughout the
hazard area, and has a UL listed fixed femperatte~e of 435°F. Wf-er-
exposed ro a fire corxlition, the tubing ruptures, nelievir-g all of the
pressure in the tubing and accumulator thus firing the system
using a nitrogen cylinder. The PRM comes complete with enclo-
sure, accumulator, end of line fitting, connector for mechanical
manual pull, one SPDT microswitch, and "knock-0trts': n Is ca-
pable of firing up to 10 KP 375 cyllr-ders and releasing up ro 2 gas
valves.
MECHAN/CAL GAS VALVES - '/. TO Z /NCH S/ZEST
A mechanical gas valve, specifcalty listed by U.L for use with
the Amerex KP system, shall be Installed for automatic shut
off of gas whenever gas appliances one used. The valve has a
` pull to close"design requiring a pull force to trip a latch which
holds the valve in the open position. The cover of the gas valve
has a visual indicator showing the valve's position. Existing
mechanical valves, it operating, may be used according to the
listed manual.
ELECTR/CAL GAS VALVE:
d an electrically operated gas valve is required, it must be U.L
Listed for use w-th the Amerex KP system and operate by
using a micro switch and a U.L. listed manual reset relay.
ELECTR/C M/CRO SW/TCH:
U.L. listed elecMc micro switches are provld~ed to accomplish
system output functions. The switches one "stackab/e" inside
the MRM /PRM without requiring extra mounting hardware.
From 1 to 4 sets of dry form "C" contacts are available.
Amerex recognized and addressed the unique hazards of
modern restaurant cooking by creating the Model B260
and B262 Class ~~K" Wet Chemical ~~Kitchen Use" fire ex- ,,,
tinguisher.
This extinguisher along with the research and tests to
develop it has changed the way thaf NFPA regards cook-
ing grease fires. After July 1, 1998, all new installations
of fire extinguishers protecting cooking hazards require
a Class "K" extinguisher. This class recognizes the
unique nature of cooking grease which requires not only
extinguishment but the cooling effect which is best ob-
tained with WET CHEMICAL extinguishers. When the KP
System is used in combination with the Amerex Model
B260 or 8262 you have the perfect two step attack for
kitchen fire suppression!

KP DISTRIBUTION PIPING
DESIGN LIMITS FOR ALL CYLINDER SIZES
When designing a KP system to protect a kitchen containing a Fryer, Wok or Range, the following
MINIMUM TOTAL SYSTEM PIPING must be used in accordance with the chart below:

NOTE: 1. In a single 3.75 Gallon Straight Pipe System, 5' of pipe may be transferred from the supply line to

2. The use of 3/8' pipe with two manifold KP375s is only permitted when the SUPPLY LINE length is

4. No mixing of pipe sizes is allowed within pipe categories. Example: if one nozzle branch is to be 'r4" pipe

DUCT PROTECTION LIMITATIONS -
TWO NOZZLES (2 x PIN 16416)
Two Amerex duct nozzles (P/N 16416) will protect ducts with
51 inches to 82 inches (129.5 - 208.3 cm) or a maximum d
inches (66 cm). To correctly position the nozzles a rectangul~
be divided along its longest side into four equal distances. f

TWO - 1'h FLOW POINT NOZZLES (P/N 11983)
The Amerex solid fuel appliance/duct nozzle (PM 11983) is listed to
protect a restaurant cooking exhaust duct of unlimited length and up
to 100 perimeter inches (254 cm) or 32 inch diameter (81.2 cm)
using two nozzles. The nozzles total three flow points and to
properly position the nozzles, a rectangular duct should be divided
along its longest side into four equal distances. A circular duct
should be divided along its center line into four equal distances. The
nozzles are to be placed at one quarter and three quarters position
of the duct width (or diameter) with both nozzles on the center line,
placed 2 - 8 inches (5.08 - 20.3 cm) into the duct opening and aimed

The Amerex appliance, plenum nozzle (P/N 11982) is capable of protecting plenums up to 10 feet (3.048m)
long with either a single inclined filter bank or a 'V" bank filter arrangement. The filter height cannot exceed
24 inches (60.96 cm). Each plenum nozzle uses one flow point. The nozzle must be positioned 4 inches
(10.16) maximum from the wall, aimed horizontally and positioned down 1/3 the filter height from the top of
the filter.

PROTECTION OF BACK SHELVES
Confronted with a back shelf that obstructs the spray pattern of NOZZLE PN14178
the protecting nozzle? Locate the nozzle so that it is below the
shelf and still within its listed minimum. When the shelf
interferes with the proper nozzle orientation it may be
necessary to route the pipe under the shelf or provide a hole in NOZZLENNEIGHT

the shelf for the nozzle. Always receive agreement on shelf
alterations before performin the work.
