Ownership After construction and acceptance, the water system infrastructure will be owned and maintained by the City of Yelm as part of the City water system. ' 2. Existing Facilities ' The proposed development is served by a newly constructed 10-inch PVC water main which ties into the city main on the north side of Highway 507 at the intersection of Forrester Heights Drive.. The water main will provide service to the proposed 24 single-family residential lots of ' Forrester Heights Phase 1 and possible future phases that may connect to the main. 3. Project Description The constructed water main follows the topography of the site and results in approximately 60- feet of elevation difference along the approximately 1,580 feet of pipe. The low point of the system is at the Booster Pump Station location near the intersection of Forrester Heights Drive ' and Highway 507, and the high point is at the end of the constructed line near lots 16 and 17. Pressure testing of the constructed 10-inch line indicates that adequate residual pressure is not available at the high point of the system. In order to provide adequate residual pressure for ' required fire flow and peak demand a booster pump station (BPS) is proposed. This report will demonstrate that the proposed BPS will provide adequate system capacity and reliability for this development. If future phases of development connect to the current water t main the topography of the area is such that the current service connections will still be at the highest ,point of the system and the booster pump will be able to provide adequate pressure to additional development. 4. System Demand Requirements Determination of Pumping System Discharge Capacity Requirements: The BPS must be able to provide minimum capacity for both normal operating conditions and fire flow demand of the development. ' Normal Operating Conditions: The BPS must be able to provide the peak hourly demand (PHD) to the service area and ' maintain a minimum of 30 psi at all service connections. Peak hourly demand is calculated using the Washington State Department of Health: Water System Design Manual, as follows: ' Service area=24 single family residences PHD = (MDD/1440)((C)(N) +F] +18 Where: PHD = Peak Hourly Demand (gpm) C = Coefficient Associated With Ranges of ERU's N = Number of Service Connections, ERU's ' F = Factor Associated with Ranges of ERU's MDD = Maximum Day Demand, (gpd/ERU) (MDD=ADD x 2) ' ADD = Average Day Demand (gpd/ERU) KPFF Consulting Engineers 1 August 23, 2007 ' Project No.: 406050.10 Forrester Hei hts 9 Booster Pump Station Project Report ADD=(8000/ARR)+200 .ARR = Average Annual Rainfall, (in/yr) Knowing that we have 24 residential service connections(ERU's) and using table 5-1 of ' the Water System Manual; N= 24, C=3.0 and F=O. The closest rainfall monitering station maintained by the Western Regional Climate ' Center(WRCC) is in Olympia, WA. The WRCC online database shows that the average annual rainfall is 50.88 in/yr. (ARR=50.88 in/yr) Therefore: ' ADD = (8000/50.88) +200 = 357.2 gpd/ERU MDD = 357.2 x 2 = 714.4 gpd/ERU PHD = (714.4/1440)[(3.0 x 24) + 0] + 18 = 53.7 gpm ' The peak hourly demand of the system is 53.7 gpm with a minimum pressure of 30 psi at all service connections. ' Fire Flow Condition: The BPS must be able to provide a fire flow of 750 gpm, as dictated by the City of Yelm, plus ' the calculated peak hourly demand to the service area and maintain a minimum of 20 psi at all points in the distribution system. Fire Flow Demand = 750 gpm + 53.7 gpm = 803.7 gpm The fire flow demand of the system is 803.7 gpm with a minimum pressure of 20 psi at all points of the distribution system. Total Dynamic Head Required: The total dynamic head (TDH) that the booster pump must work against is shown as follows: TDH = He+ ~ Hf+ H~- HS ' Where: He = Static Discharge Head (ft) ~ Hf = Sum of Minor Losses (ft) [pipe friction, fittings, etc] ' H~ = Discharge Head (ft) HS = Suction Head (ft) He = 65 ft (elevation difference between high point of system and pump) ' Minor losses include friction losses(Hfs), fittings losses and losses through the pumps. Friction losses were computed using Hazen-Williams equation. Fora 10" PVC pipe at 804 gpm the friction loss is 0.316 ft/100-ft of pipe. Hfs = (1580 ft / 100) x 0.316 = 5.0 ft Adding to this a conservative estimate of 10.0 ft for fittings losses and 15.0 ft of losses through the boosterpaq itself. ~ Hf = 30 ft KPFF Consulting Engineers 2 August 23, 2007 Project No.: 406050.10 n Forrester Heights Booster Pump Station Project Report if we assume that we want the same pressure at the top of the system as is currently supplied by the city line at the connection point then H~ and HS cancel each other out in the TDH equation. For peak hourly demand and fire flow demand a minimum pressure of 30 psi and 20 psi is required respectively. A pressure of 30 psi correlates to H~ of 69.3 ft and 20 psi correlates to a H~ of 46.2 ft. The existing pressure of 44 psi at the connection correlates to a HS of 101.6 ft. Therefore: TDH = 65ft + 30ft + 69.3ft - 101.6ft = 62.7ft @ a residual pressure of 30 psi TDH = 65ft + 30ft + 46.2ft - 101.6ft = 39.6ft @ a residual pressure of 20 psi The system demand information was used to select the pumps and equipment for this project. 5. Equipment Selection The BPS was sized to KPFF specifications by PumpTech Inc. in order to meet the demands of normal operating conditions and fire flow. A Grundfos Boosterpaq with three CR 64-1-1 pumps was determined to be the most desirable package for this project. A configuration of three identical pumps in parallel is specified with the third pump strictly for redundancy in case one pump fails. The system will be set up with one variable frequency drive(VFD) in the control panel that will alternate between the three pumps. Each time the system cycles the VFD will alternate to the next pump to evenly distribute the running time on all pumps in the system. If the demand were to increase beyond the capacity of one pump then the other pumps would activate one by one. One pump would be able to supply peak daily demand and two pumps would be able to supply fire flow demand. It is not expected that demand will ever dictate that all three pumps will ever run simultaneously. A 132 gallon hydro-neumatic pressure tank will be mounted just off the boosterpaq manifold in order to lessen the cycling of the pumps when small demands are present. The BPS will also include a diesel generator to supply power to the pumps in the event of a power outage. The pump curve shown in figure 1 indicates that two pumps will be able to supply fire flow demand. Pump characteristics and specifications are included in Appendix 2.
