Report Subject: Wetland Reconnaissance
Location: The Birkland study site is located at 10336 & 10344 SE Wes[ Road in
Yelm, Washington. It is located in the southeast 1/4 of Section 19,
Township 17N, Range 2E. Tax Parcel Numbers: 64303601701 &
64303601702.
Dear Mr. Birkland:
The purpose of [his letter is to provide documentation that an onsite stream /wetland
reconnaissance was conducted by Charles Herrmann & Dan Hfnar (wetland scientists) on
December 17, 2004, to determine whether streams, wetlands, or their associated buffers will
affect site development.
No jurisdictional wetlands or streams were identified on the project site. Yelm Creek runs from
east to west about 150 feet north of the project site. There is a small wetland on the north (away
from the site) side of the creek directly north of the site, and a sewnd wetland, also associated
with Yelm Creek, northwest of the project site. Both wetlands are more than 200 feet from the
project site. Please see the attached aerial photo for details.
According to the Thurston County Critical Area Ordinance, Type 1, 2, and 3 streams are given a
100-foot buffer. Far high intensity land uses, Category II wetlands are given a 200.foot buffer,
and Category III wetlands are given a 100-foot buffet Yelm Creek is, at least, a Type 3 stream
(i.e., fish bearing). The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Habitats and Species Map
report indicate presence of resident cutthroat in this portion of the stream. The map also indicates
presence of Chinook, Chum, and Coho salmon approximately 0.8 miles down stream (northwest)
from the site.

A detail wetland delineation/rating was not completed on the offsite wetlands, but (using the
1993 edition of the Western Washington Wetlands Rating System) they are considered likely to
qualify as Category II or III wetlands, requiring a maximum buffer of 200 feet for high intensity
land uses. They will not qualify for a Category I rating because they do not contain habitat for
threatened or endangered species, are not mature forested systems, do not contain bogs, and arc
not Estuarine.
In an effort to double check the information provided on the Washington Department of Fish and
Wildlife Habitats and Species Map (specifically the Chinook salmon habitat), Debbie Carnivali,
a wildlife biologist with WDFW was contacted. She verified that Chinook habitat ends
approximately 0.8 miles northwest of the site as shown on the Habitats and Species Map and
therefore the associated wetlands near the site do not contain Chinook habitat.
The attached aerial photo of the vicinity of the project site shows wetlands, Yelm Creek, and an
approximation of the largest possible buffers. All of these areas are offsite, and therefore will not
affect site development.
The attached High Groundwater Hazard Area map, obtained from the "Thurston County Geodata
system, shows [hat high groundwater was mapped north of the site along the Yelm Creek
corridor. A 300-foot HGHA buffer extends onto the northern portion of the site. These buffers
aze not related to wetland conditions, but rather to flooding potential. Please note that all
development within the 300-foot buffer must be at least 50 feet from the edge oCthe mapped
HGI IA and at least 2 feet higher in elevation. There aze also some tree density issues with
I IGHA that may affect development. For more information on HGHA effects, please refer to
that section of the Critical Areas Ordinance.
1 hope this report provides enough information to proceed with project planning. Please call if
you have any questions or require additional detail or clarification on any of these issues.
