General Description TYCO CPVC Pipe and Fittings pro- duced by Johnson Controls are designed exclusively for use in wet pipe automatic fire sprinkler systems. The TYCO CPVC Pipe and Fittings are produced from BLAZEMASTER CPVC compound that is a specially developed thermoplastic compound composed of post chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) resin and state of the art addi- tives. TYCO CPVC Pipe and Fittings are easier to install than traditional steel pipe systems, and at the same time, provide superior heat resistance and strength as compared to traditional CPVC and PVC piping materials used in the plumbing trade. Various adapt- ers are available to connect CPVC pipe to metallic piping. All female pipe thread adapters have brass inserts for durability. Grooved adapters connect directly to grooved end valves and metallic pipe, with flexible grooved end couplings. NOTICE The CPVC Pipe and Fittings produced with BLAZEMASTER CPVC compound described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document and with the applica- ble standards of the NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION (NFPA), in addition to the standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for main- taining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating con- dition. Pendent and Upright Sprinklers 1. Follow BlazeMaster one-step solvent cement instructions for socket or spigot fittings. Never complete a solvent cement joint with the sprinkler installed into the Instaseal fitting per NFPA 13 requirements. DO NOT OVER APPLY CEMENT WHERE IT COULD OVER SPILL TO RUBBER SEAT. Installer must be properly trained and certified for construction and assembly of BlazeMaster® CPVC piping systems. 2. After proper cure time of cement, make sure sealing surface of rubber is clean and free of any nicks or scratches on sprinkler seal end surface. Use only the thumb and forefinger (finger strength) to start the sprinkler in the lead thread of the Instaseal sprinkler adapter continuing until sprinkler contacts rubber seat. Using sprinkler manufacturer’s recommended wrench, turn sprinkler clockwise (CW) a minimum of one half (½) turn for seal. If sprinkler frame arms require alignment with pipe, continue to rotate CW additional to align, up to the maximum of 1¼ turns from initial seat to sprinkler contact as stated and as shown in Figure 1. NOTICE Do not tighten more than 1¼ turns from initial sprinkler touch to rubber seat. Over-tightening will cause the rubber seat to protrude into the waterway and reduce the K-factor which impedes flow. Additionally, permaent damage to the rubber seat will occur leading to failure and leakage. Refer to Figure 1. Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers Overview: Horizontal sidewall sprinklers require a specific position including the deflector in the top position and horizontal to the ceiling. Due to the random starting point of threads on both the sprinklers and the adapter fittings it is required that special attention be given to installation of the horizontal sidewall sprinklers. During the initial assembly (Step 2), note the deflector position. If deflector is greater than ½ turn from final position in proper horizontal position, rotate CW only enough to position sprinkler deflector in proper Horizontal position. If deflector position is less than ½ turn to proper position then rotate CW one full turn plus to proper position, maximum 1¼ turns from sprinkler touch of seat. Use proper manufacturer’s sprinkler wrench. 1. Solvent Cement Joining Follow BlazeMaster one-step solvent cement instructions for socket or spigot fittings. Never complete a solvent cement joint with the sprinkler installed into Instaseal fitting per NFPA 13 requirements. DO NOT OVER APPLY CEMENT WHERE IT COULD OVER SPILL TO RUBBER SEAT. Installer must be properly trained and certified for construction and assembly of BlazeMaster Piping system. The rubber seat should not be compressed during this step. (Note: also include accessories as supplied by sprinkler manufacturer, such as adjustable cups and escutcheons, on to sprinkler prior to installing sprinkler into adapter fitting.) 3. Determine Sprinkler Position Take note of the position of the sprinkler deflector in relation to the final required position. Determine whether greater or less than one quarter (½) turn is required to reach the required final position. Turn the sprinkler CW with proper sprinkler wrench as required by sprinkler manufacturer. Rotate only to the position where the sprinkler deflector is in the required final installed position. TOP Required Final Position See the manufacturer’s installation instructions for proper location and distance from ceiling. Standard relief valves are required to OPEN in a range of pressure between 90% and 105% of their rating. The valves are required to CLOSE at a pressure above 80% of that rating. The relief valve should be installed where it is easily accessible for maintenance. Care should be taken that the relief valve CANNOT be isolated from the system when the system is operational. A relief valve should NEVER have a shutoff valve or a plug downstream of its outlet. DESCRIPTION Viking Freedom® Residential Concealed Pendent Sprinkler VK494 is a small thermosensitive, glass-bulb residential sprinkler designed for installation on concealed pipe systems where the appearance of a smooth ceiling is desired. The orifice design, with a K-factor of 4.9 (70.6 metric*), allows the sprinkler’s efficient use of available water supplies for the hydraulically designed fire-protection system. The fast response glass bulb operating element and special deflector characteristics meet the challenges of residential sprinkler standards. The sprinkler is pre-assembled with a threaded adapter for installation with a low-profile small-diameter cover assembly installed flush to the ceiling. The two-piece design allows installation and testing of the sprinkler prior to installation of the cover plate. The “push-on” and “thread-on” designs of the concealed cover plate assemblies allow easy installation of the cover plate after the system has been tested and the ceiling finish has been applied, while also providing up to 1/2” (13 mm) of vertical adjustment. The cover assembly can be removed and reinstalled, allowing temporary removal of ceiling panels without taking the sprinkler system out of service or removing the sprinkler. The Electroless Nickel PTFE (ENT) coating has been investigated for installation in corrosive atmospheres and is C-UL-US-EU Listed as indicated in the Approval Charts. The ENT finish is only available for the sprinkler assembly, the cover plate is not plated. 2. Refer to Tables 1 and 2. 4. INSTALLATION Refer to appropriate NFPA Installation Standards. 5. OPERATION During fire conditions, when the temperature around the sprinkler approaches the cover plate’s nominal temperature rating, the cover plate detaches and releases the deflector. Continued heating of the exposed sprinkler causes the heat-sensitive liquid in the glass bulb to expand. When the temperature reaches the sprinkler’s nominal temperature rating, the glass bulb shatters releasing the yoke, pip cap assembly and sealing spring. Water begins flowing through the sprinkler orifice and strikes the deflector form-ing a uniform spray pattern over a specific area of coverage, which is determined by the water supply pressure at the sprinkler, in order to extinguish or control the fire. (2.74 m). BEAM CEILING GUIDELINES C-UL-US-EU Listed for installation in residential occupancies with beam ceilings (with horizontal ceilings only). Refer to the Approval Chart for sprinkler areas of coverage and hydraulic design. Sprinkler Location: Locate sprinklers on the underside of the beams (not in the bays or pockets formed by the beams). Refer to Figure 2. The vertical distance from the sprinkler deflector to the bottom of the primary beam must be between 1” and 3” (25 to 76 mm). The horizontal distance from the centerline of the sprinkler to the primary beam cannot be more than 2” (51 mm) (Figure 2). Beam Position: Directly attached to the underside of a combustible or non-combustible smooth ceiling of any height. Beam Size and Shape (Cross section): • Depth: Maximum 14” (356 mm) for primary beams. Secondary beam depth cannot be greater than the primary beam. • Width: Unlimited. • Beam Shape: Rectangular to circular. Beam Types: Combustible or non-combustible, solid surface, solid or hollow core. Beam Spacing: A. For primary beams, the distance from the wall to the center of the nearest primary beam must be at least 3’-4” (1.0 m), and not more than one-half the listed sprinkler spacing. Note: Sprinklers may not be required to be located in the first beam nearest the wall. Center-to-center distance between primary beams is to be a maximum of 16 ft (4.9 m). Refer to Figure 3A. B. When beam pockets created by the primary beams exceed 20 ft (6.1 m) in length, secondary beams are required as follows (also refer to Figure 3B): 1. Secondary beam depth must be equal to primary beam depth. 2. Secondary beams must be placed so that the bays formed by the primary beams do not exceed 20 ft (6.1 m) in length. C. When primary beam spans do not exceed 20 ft (6.1 m), secondary beams (not required) may have any distance from wall to nearest secondary beam and any distance center to center between secondary beams. Refer to Figure 3C. Also: When primary beam spans exceed 20ft (6.1m) an alternate protection scheme for the compartment would be to calculate all the sprinklers in the com- partment. Refer to Figure 5. • More stringent design requirement. • Secondary beams or baffles would not be required for a compartment space design. • The minimum required discharge from each sprinkler would utilize flow rates given in the Approval Chart for NFPA 13D and NFPA13R applications Lintels: Must be present over doorways exiting the compartment. Lintel height must be at least 8” (203 mm), or at least the depth of the primary beams, whichever is greater. Beam and Soffit Arrangements: If a soffit is installed, beams may be arranged within the soffit. The cross section of the soffit may be any size, pro- vided it does not create an obstruction to water distribution per the obstruction rules of NFPA 13 for residential sprinklers. Where there is a soffit, beam spacing from the wall is to be measured from the face of the soffit rather than the wall. Refer to Figure 3D. NOTE: The sprinkler area of coverage is to be measured from the wall. Definitions: • Primary beams: The main beams that run primarily in one direction. • Secondary beams: The beams that run perpendicular to the main beams. IMPORTANT: Always refer to Bulletin Form No. F_091699 - Care and Handling of Sprinklers. Also refer to Form No.s F_080190, F_080814, and F_080415 for general care, installation, and maintenance information. Viking sprinklers are to be installed in accordance with the latest edition of Viking technical data, the appropriate standards of NFPA and any other similar Authorities Having Jurisdiction, and also with the provisions of governmental codes, ordinances, and standards, whenever applicable. DESCRIPTION Viking Quick Response Dry Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are thermosensitive spray sprinklers suitable for use in areas subject to freezing. The sprinklers are designed for dry systems and preaction systems where it is necessary to prevent water or condensation from entering the drop nipple before sprinkler operation. They may also be installed in spaces subject to freezing and supplied from a wet system in an adjacent heated area. Viking Quick Response Dry HSW Sprinklers are available in various finishes and temperature ratings to meet design requirements. The special Polyester and Electroless Nickel PTFE (ENT) coatings have been investigated for installation in corrosive atmospheres and are listed/approved as corrosion resistant as indi- cated in the Approval Charts. (Note: FM Global has no approval classification for Polyester coatings as corrosion resistant.) NOTE: When installed in some corrosive environments, the Polyester finish may change color. This natural discoloration over time is not in itself an indi- cation of corrosion and should not be treated as such. All sprinklers installed in corrosive environments should be replaced or tested as described in NFPA 25 on a more frequent basis. 2. Other limits may apply, depending on fire loading, sprinkler location, and other requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction. Refer to specific installation standards. 3 The corrosion-resistant Polyester and ENT coatings have passed the standard corrosion test required by the approving agencies indi-cated in the Approval Charts. These tests cannot and do not represent all possible corrosive environments. Note: These coatings are NOT corrosion proof. Prior to installation, verify through the end-user that the coatings are compatible with or suitable for the proposed environment. Polyester and ENT coatings are applied to the exposed exterior surfaces only. Note that the spring is exposed on sprinklers with Polyester and ENT coatings. 4 When installed in some corrosive environments, the Polyester finish may change color. This natural discoloration over time is not in itself an indication of corrosion and should not be treated as such. All sprinklers installed in corrosive environments should be replaced or tested as described in NFPA 25 on a more frequent basis. Product Description The Reliable Model DH56 Dry Extended Coverage Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler is a quick-response sprinkler utilizing a sensitive 3mm glass bulb thermal element listed for use in light hazard applications. Dry sprinklers are intended for use on wet, dry, and preaction systems to protect indoor and outdoor areas that are subject to freezing. When used on wet systems, it is important that a minimum exposed length of barrel inside the face of the wall or insulation is provided to offset conduction of potentially freezing temperatures from the unconditioned (sprinkler) end along the barrel. See Figure 6 for guidelines on using dry sprinklers on wet systems. Environments where dry sprinklers are employed are often corrosive. For this reason, Model DH56 dry sprinklers have a special wax fillet placed in the gap between the cup that supports the bulb and the wrenching boss. This wax prevents contaminants from entering the internal portion of the drop nipple and must not be removed. www.reliablesprinkler.com Application The Model DH56 is a horizontal sidewall dry sprinkler intended for installation in light hazard occupancies in accordance with NFPA 13. These sprinklers are designed to provide fire protection in long and narrow spaces such as hallways, corridors, decks and rooms up to 28 feet (8.5m) wide and 10 feet (3m) deep. Model DH56 sprinklers are rated for 250 psi (17.2 bar) and can be mounted between 4 and 12 inches (102 and 305mm) down from the ceiling. cULus Listed Model DH56 Dry Extended Coverage Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler Bulletin 016 March 2022 Model DH56 EC HSW Coverage Area Figure 1 Model DH56 EC Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler SIN RA1664 Technical Specifications Style: Extended Coverage Horizontal Sidewall Threads: 1” NPT or ISO7-1R1 Nominal K-Factor: 5.6 (80) Max. Reliable Model DH56 dry sidewall sprinklers may be installed in ductile or malleable cast iron threaded tees, or CPVC tees and adapters upon verification that the sprinkler inlet fitting does not interfere with the interior of the fitting (see Figure 7). DO NOT install Reliable Model DH56 dry sidewall sprinklers into elbows or couplings, welded outlets, mechanical tees, or gasket sealed CPVC fittings. DH56 HSW with Standard Escutcheon Cut a 2-1/8” (54mm) diameter hole in the wall as shown in Fig. 2. Apply a PTFE based sealant to the sprinkler threads before installing into the fitting. Use the Model F3R installation wrench (see Fig. 8) on the square boss to tighten the sprinkler until it is secured in the sprinkler fitting. Installation is completed by removing the orange glass bulb protector and sliding the escutcheon over the finished sleeve until tight to the finished surface. DH56 HSW with HB Escutcheon Cut a 2-1/2” (64mm) diameter hole in the wall as shown in Fig. 3. Apply a PTFE based sealant to the sprinkler threads before installing into the fitting. Use the Model F3R installation wrench (see Fig. 8) on the square boss to tighten the sprinkler until it is secured in the sprinkler fitting. Installation is completed by removing the orange glass bulb protector and sliding the skirt over the finished sleeve until tight to the finished suface. DH56 HSW with FP Recessed Escutcheon Cut a 2-5/8” (67mm) diameter hole in the wall as shown in Fig. 4. Apply a PTFE based sealant to the sprinkler threads before installing into the fitting. Use the Model F3R installation wrench (see Fig. 8) on the square boss to tighten the sprinkler until it is secured in the sprinkler fitting. Installation is completed by removing the orange glass bulb protector and pushing (or threading) the FP escutcheon into the threaded cup. Final adjustment is made by turning the FP escutcheon clockwise until the flange makes full contact with the wall surface. DH56 HSW SWC Concealed Cover Plate Cut a 2-5/8” (67mm) diameter hole in the wall as shown in Fig. 5. Apply a PTFE based sealant to the sprinkler threads before installing into the fitting. Use the Model F3R installation wrench (see Fig. 8) on the square boss to tighten the sprinkler until it is secured in the sprinkler fitting. Installation is completed by removing the orange glass bulb protector and pushing (or threading) the SWC cover plate into the threaded cup. Final adjustment is made by turning the cover plate clockwise until the cover plate flange makes full contact with the finished surface. Note: 1. The Model XLO2 installation wrench for FP Recessed and SWC Concealed installations has a open side to accommodate the sprinkler deflector and can only be inserted in one way (see Figure 8). Care must be taken not to damage the deflector during installation. 2. Do not over-tighten sprinklers into fittings. It is recommended that Reliable dry sprinklers be installed using the wrench referenced in this bulletin. A pipe wrench may also be used to install dry sprinklers provided that it only engages the outer tube (steel pipe) of the assembly. Note that a pipe wrench will impart a large amount of torque into the final assembly. This torque will need to be matched or exceeded to remove the sprinkler at a later date. A leak free joint can normally be obtained by installing the sprinkler to a minimum torque of 22 ft-lb (30 N-m) after applying an appropriate thread sealant. 3. Glass bulb sprinklers have orange bulb protectors to minimize bulb damage during shipping, handling, and installation. Reliable installation wrenches are designed to install sprinklers while bulb protectors are in place. REMOVE THE PROTECTORS AT THE TIME THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM IS PLACED INTO SERVICE. Removal of the protectors before this time may leave the glass bulb vulnerable to damage. Remove protectors by undoing the clasp by hand. DO NOT USE TOOLS TO REMOVE THE PROTECTORS. 4. Do not remove the wax fillet in the gap between the cup that supports the bulb and the wrenching boss. Step 3 Step 2 Step 1 Figure 8XLO2 Installation Procedure Bulletin 016 March 2022 Page 9 of 10 www.reliablesprinkler.com Maintenance Reliable Model DH56 series sprinklers should be inspected and the sprinkler system maintained in accordance with NFPA 25, as well as the requirements of any Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Prior to installation, sprinklers should remain in the original cartons and packaging until used. This will minimize the potential for damage to sprinklers that could cause improper operation or non-operation. Do not clean sprinklers with soap and water, ammonia liquid or any other cleaning fluids. Remove dust by gentle vacuuming without touching the sprinkler. Replace any sprinkler which has been painted (other than factory applied). A stock of spare sprinklers should be maintained to allow quick replacement of damaged or operated sprinklers. Failure to properly maintain sprinklers may result in inadvertent operation or non-operation during a fire event.
