CCR 2010 FINALc Additional Information ;~ ~o about contaminants Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1- 800-426-4791). Contaminant Risk: Some people are more vulner- able to contaminants in drinking water than the gen- eral population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system dis- order, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infection. These people should seek ad- vice about drinking water from their health care pro- viders. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426- 4791. In 2010, the City's wells pumped 241.42 million gallons (MG) from the ground. Where did the water go after leaving the wells? 77,6% Use by customers with water meters 187.26 MG (all customer connections are metered) 0.01 % Authorized unmetered consumption 0.03 MG (water line flushing and fire department use) 22,4% Distribution System Leakage (DSL) 54.13 MG (water that is lost due to leaks or unauthor- ized uses; the State requires Yelm to achieve a DSL of 10~ or less) The City of Yelm has established Water Use Efficiency goals; these goals were presented to the public at an open house on June 18, 2008. The City's progress to- wards achieving these goals in 2010 is as follows: Goal #1: Increase reclaimed water usage. The City pro- vides reclaimed water to large irrigation customers and other selected users. Last year, the demand for reclaimed water exceeded the supply during the summer months. The City will continue to work with customers to make use of this valu- able resource. Goal #2: Limit Distribution System Leakage to 6%. Yelm did not achieve its DSL goal in 2010. The City has imple- mented several programs to reduce DSL, including an ex- panded leak detection program, use of hydrant locks to elimi- nate theft, and meter calibration programs. Yelm is currently performing a water audit to better understand water usage patterns and identify potential solutions to the DSL problem. Goal #3: Reduce residential consumption to 200 gallons per day. Yelm has surpassed this goal. In 2010, the aver- age single family home in Yelm used 176 gallons of water per day (16% less than 2009). i "Brown is the new Green!"
