AN ORDINANCE of the City of Yelm, Washington Amending
Chapters 12.22 -Public Facility Naming and 12.20 -Street
Naming and House Numbering to Establish and Sign Historic
Road Names.
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to acknowledge historic road names of City streets,
many of which were named for early settlers and families important to the early
development of the community of Yelm; and
WHEREAS, the Council has previously adopted a procedure for identifying and naming
public facilities through Chapter 12.22 Yelm Municipal Code; and
WHEREAS, in order to develop a clear and consistent procedure for the naming of
historic roads as well as a consistent manner in identifying historic road names,
Chapters 12.20 and 12.22 Yelm Municipal Code must be amended to include historic
road names;
NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YELM, WASHINGTON,
DOES ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Section 12.22.020 Yelm Municipal Code is amended as follows:
12.22.020 Designation of name by City Council.
8The City Council shall designate the names of public parks, public facilities
and/or streets. The City Council may choose to make its selection after receiving
a written recommendation from any one of the city's advisory boards, or a
specially appointed committee, based upon public input from individuals and
organizations. Such written recommendation shall state how the proposed
name(s) meet(s) the criteria in YMC 12.22.010. If a contest or competition is to
be held to determine the name of a public park, public facility and/or street, the
advisory board/committee shall establish guidelines and rules for the contest. No
city funds shall be used for any contest prizes.
B. The Citv Cou ncil sh all desian ate placement of histor ic road/street sians. The city
ouncil may choos e to est ablish historic road/str eet names after receivina
written recom menda tion from the Yelm Historic Com mission Historic road/street
sians shall m eet the reauirem ents of Section 12 20 130 YMC and shall be noted
Section 2. Section 12.20.130 Yelm Municipal Code is amended as follows:
12.20.130 Street and road sign requirements.
A. All street and road signs erected after June 1, 1977, the effective date of the
ordinance codified in this chapter, shall display street names, district
designations and 100-block numbers in conformance with the provisions of this
chapter. On or before July 1, 1978, all existing street and road signs which are
not in conformance with the provisions of this chapter shall be replaced with new
signs, which display street names, district designations and 100-grid blocks in
conformance with the provisions of this chapter.
All street and road sians shall conform as nearly as oracticable to Chaoter 468-
95 Washington Administrative Code.
