As requested, we are pleased to present the attached retaining wall design calculations and typical cross
section for a Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall using Mutual Materials "Cornerstone R -10W or
similar segmental block facing. It is our understanding that the proposed wall will be located along the
back of lots 42 — 45 of the recent Tahoma Terra plat in Yelm, Washington. The wall will consist of a
single tier and will vary in height from 2 feet to a maximum exposed height of approximately 8 feet. We
have provided design calculations for the proposed wall for varying heights from 4 to 10 feet to allow for
potential variations in final wall height. We assumed soils parameters based on our review of the
existing site conditions observed during our September 6, 2012 site visit.
Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Wall with Segmental Block Facing
The new Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall will be faced with Mutual Materials "Cornerstone R-
100" or similar segmental block facing and should be constructed according to the manufacturers'
specifications and Development Engineering, PLLC recommendations. For segmental block walls
exceeding 4 feet in total height, we recommend they be constructed utilizing geotextile reinforced
backfill zones and wall backfill material as described in the manufactures literature and the provided
detail.
The proposed design was analyzed utilizing the computer program "Allan Block 10.0" by the Allan Block
Corporation. Since the basic block dimensions are similar to the Allan Block "Classic" unit the analysis is
valid. Two analyses are provided for the proposed wall, which include the static loading condition as
well as a seismic analysis assuming an acceleration coefficient of 0.20. It was assumed that the slope
above the wall would be less than a 5 Horizontal to 1 Vertical grade.
At a minimum, backfill material should be clean structural fill corresponding to the project specifications
that is compacted to a minimum of 95% of the Maximum Dry Density (MDD) based on the modified
proctor value for the material as obtained by ASTM 1557. A minimum of 6 inches of toe embedment is
necessary for erosion protection purposes, however additional embedment maybe required to
maintain a minimum 2 foot setback from the face of the existing slope. The first layer of geogrid
reinforcement should be placed on top of the lowest row of blocks. The remaining layers of geogrid are
then placed on top of every second row of blocks. The final reinforcement configuration results in a

layer of geogrid every second row (two blocks between each layer of geogrid). To resist seismic forces
the upper one or two rows of grid will be lengthened in accordance to Table 1 Grid Schedule.

Since subsurface conditions were not observed prior to this wall design, Development Engineering, PLLC
or the project geotechnical engineer of record should verify bearing conditions to assure adequate
bearing capacity, observe the drain placement and provide intermittent observations and field density
testing of the backfill material during the wall construction.

contractor's responsibility to follow all recommendations of the project geotechnical report and projects
specifications for wall backfill, compaction, footing inspection and other criteria as appropriate.

SEGA Engineers has provided structural engineering including lateral loads analysis,
shear wall design, and framing calculations for the subject project. We have been asked
to comment on the applicability of detail 11/S20 for use at the front entry where the
approach will be a cast concrete stair over fill. The distance from top -of -slab to top -of-
stem wall is about 48 inches which is less than the specified 60 inch maximum. The
material at finish grade, be it purely soil fill or concrete over fill, is not particularly
relevant in this application. Note that the interior fill and slab on grade must be in place
prior to placing the exterior fill and stair.

This letter summarizes our construction monitoring observations at the subject site.We provided intermittent site
observations regarding the retaining wall construction as requested by the owner/contractor. Our site visits,
observations,and testing were performed between September 20,2012 through April 29,2013.
Footin�Subsrade:November 26,2012,Visited the site to observe footing soils. Exposed native soils were
observed to be in a dense condition. All exposed and observed footing subgrades appeared suitable to support
anticipate loads.
Grid Len�th and Orientation: January 5,2012,Interim site inspection,the geotextile grid was observed during our
inspections.The woven geotextile was observed to be oriented with the stronger axis perpendicular to the face of
the wall.Grid length and orientation were observed to be in compliance of our recommendations.
Final Inspection: On April 29,2013 we visited the site to observe the final construction of the wall.At the time of
our site visit we observed that the final wall height was within specifications and the wall was substantially
complete.
Based on our observations and testing,it is our opinion that the retaining wall was constructed in accordance with
the recammendations contained in our Retaining Wall Design dated September 20,2012.
