The Models F1 FR LO and F1 FR LO Recessed automatic sprinklers utilize a 3.0 mm frangible glass bulb. These sprin- klers have demonstrated response times in laboratory tests which are five to ten times faster than standard response sprinklers. This quick response enables the Model F1 FR LO and Fi FR LO Recessed sprinklers to apply water to a fire much faster than standard sprinklers of the same tempera- ture rating. The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled amount of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a precisely man- ufactured glass capsule. This glass bulb is specially con- structed to provide fast thermal response. The balance of parts are made of brass, copper and beryllium nickel. At normal temperatures, the glass bulb contains the fluid in both the liquid and vapor phases. The vapor phase can be seen as a small bubble. As heat is applied, the liquid expands, forcing the bubble smaller and smaller as the liq- uid pressure increases. Continued heating forces the liquid Upright Conventional Pendent to push out against the bulb, causing the glass to shatter, opening the waterway and allowing the deflector to distrib- ute the discharging water. The temperature rating of the sprinkler is identified by the color of the glass bulb. Application Quick response sprinklers are used in fixed fire protec- tion systems: Wet, Dry, Deluge or Preaction. Care must be exercised that the orifice size, temperature rating, deflector style and sprinkler type are in accordance with the latest published standards of the National Fire Protection Asso- ciation or the approving Authority Having Jurisdiction. VdS Schadenverhutung GmbH UL Listing Category Sprinklers, Automatic & Open (VNIV) Quick Response Sprinkler Product Description Reliable Models F1FR56, F1FR42, FiFRXLH & F1FR28 Series Sprinklers are quick response sprinklers which combine the durability of a standard sprinkler with the attractive low profile of a decorative sprinkler. The Models F 1 FR56, F1 FR42, F1 FRXLH & F 1 FR28 Series Recessed automatic sprinklers utilize a 3.0 mm frangible glass bulb. These sprinklers have demonstrat- ed response times in laboratory tests which are five to ten times faster than standard response sprinklers. This quick response enables the Model F1FR56, F1FR42, FIFRXLH & F1FR28 Series sprinklers to apply water to a fire much faster than standard sprinklers of the same temperature rating. The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled amount of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a pre- cisely manufactured glass capsule. This glass bulb is specially constructed to provide fast thermal response. }~+, Conventional _ ~_- i. ~~ e~;~ ~ ~ ~' ~~,:; =~ Vertical Sidewall Horizontal Sidewall Recessed PendenUF1/F2 Recessed Horizontal5idewall Pendent Pendent/FP `' XLH Upnght At normal temperatures, the glass bulb contains the fluid in both the liquid and vapor phases. The vapor phase can be seen as a small bub- ble. As heat is applied, the liquid expands, forcing the bubble smaller and smaller as the liquid pressure Pendent F1/F2 increases. Continued heating forces Pendent FP the liquid to push out against the bulb, causing the glass to shatter, opening the waterway and allowing the deflec- tor to distribute the discharging water. c c~ 0 The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc., 103 Fairview Park Drive, Elmsford, New York 10523 ., Application Quick response sprinklers are used in fixed fire protection systems: Wet, Dry, Deluge or Preaction. Care must be exercised that the orifice size, temperature rating, deflector style and sprinkler type are in accordance with the latest published standards of the National Fire Protection Association or the approving Authority Having Jurisdiction. Quick response sprinklers are intended for installation as specified in NFPA 13. Quick response sprinklers and standard re- sponse sprinklers should not be intermixed. The cover plate and sprinkler cup as- semblies are joined using a cover plate skirt with flexible tabs for threaded engagement. A choice of two cover plate assemblies provide either'/i' (13mm) or 5/,s" (8mm) of cover adjustment. Do not install these sprinklers in ceiling which have positive pressure in the space above. After a 25/s" (67mm) diameter hole is cut in the ceiling, the sprinkler is easily installed with the Model RC1 Wrench. A Tef- lon" based thread sealant should be applied to the sprinkler threads only. The Model RC 1 Wrench is then used to engage the sprinkler wrenching surfaces and to install the sprinkler in the fitting. When inserting or removing the wrench from the sprin- kler/cup assembly, care should be taken to prevent damage to the sprinkler. DO NOT WRENCH ON ANY OTHER PART OF THE SPRINKLER. The cover plate is then pushed onto the cup. Fnal adjustment is made by hand turning the cover plate until the skirt flange makes full contact with the ceiling. Cover plate removal requires turning in the counter clockwise direction. After installation, inspect all sprinklers to ensure that there is a gap between the saver plate and ceiling and that the four cup slots are open and free from any air flow impediment to the space above. Concealed cover plateJcup assemblies are listed only for use with specific sprinklers. The use of any other concealed cover plate%up assemblywith the Model F1 F1~56 Pendent Sprinkleror the use of the Model CCP Concealed cover plate assembly on any sprinkler with which it is not specifically listed my prevent good fire protection and will vdd all guarantees, warranties, listings and approvals. Glass bulb sprinklers have orange bulb protectors to minimize bulb damage during shipping, handling and installation. REMOVE THIS PROTECTION AT THE TIME THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM IS PLACED IN SERVICE FOR FIRE PROTECTION. Removal of the protectors before this time may leave the bulb vulnerable to dam- age. Conforms to EN 12253 (CE) The Reliable Model D Dry Pipe Valve makes pos- sible the installation of automatic sprinkler sys- tems in buildings in which freezing temperatures prevail. This type of system, called a Dry Pipe Sys- tem, has air under pressure instead of water in the piping above the dry pipe valve. When one or more automatic sprinklers operate due to fire, the air pressure in the system is reduced -the dry pipe valve opens and water under pressure flows in the activated sprinkler(s) and is then distributed on the fire. ~~ W The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc., 103 Fairview Park Drive , Elmsford, New York, 10523 Operation The Reliable Model D Dry Pipe Valve in its closed and open positions is shown in Figures 1 and 2. The closed position is maintained as long as the air pressure in the system piping above the dry pipe valve is sufficient to exert a greater force on the top side of the clapper than is exerted on its underside by the pressure of the water supply. Since the area included by the air seat is approximately six times that of the water seat (The Differential Principle) the air pressure needed to keep the dry pipe valve closed is only a fraction of that of the water supply. Table 1 gives the recommended air pressure for various water supply pressures for both sizes of Model D Dry Pipe Valves. Table 1 Water Pressure in Su I Line sl bar Air Pressure psf (bar) To be Pum ed into S stem Maximum Not less than Not more than 20 1 38 10 0 68 20 1 37 50 3 44 15 1 03 25 1 72 75 5 17 20 1 37 30 2 06 100 6 89 25 1 72 35 2 41 125 8 62 30 2 06 40 2 75 150 10 34 35 2 41 45 3 10 175 12 06 40 2 75 50 3 44 When one or more automatic sprinklers operate due to fire, the air pressure in the system piping above the dry pipe valve is reduced. The pressure of the water supply, now by exerting the greater force, raises and rotates the clapper to its open po- sition, permitting the water to flow to the operated sprinkler(s). Water also flows from the alarm outlet of the dry pipe valve through a strainer to the Reli- able Mechanical Sprinkler Alarm and Electric Alarm Switch to automatically actuate mechanical and electrical alarms. Reliable Model D Dry Pipe Valves can be reset quickly and easily without the use of special tools. ~. OUiL£T TEST Figure 1-Closed Quick Opening Devices When an automatic sprinkler operates, the result- ing air pressure decay is inversely proportional to the size of the dry system -the larger the system, the slower the air pressure decays which slows the operation of the Dry Pipe Valve. NFPA 13, Installa- tion of Sprinkler Systems, specifies that quick opening devices may be required in dry systems having capacities of more than 500 gallons. Reliable's Model B1 Accelerator is an approved quick opening device that is easily attached to Reli- able's Dry Pipe Valves. The accelerator is sensitive to small drops in system pressure and it's quick op- eration allows the system air to pass through to the alarm outlet and the underside of the clapper. Here the air pressure build-up, coupled with the pres- sure of the water supply, opens the dry pipe valve clapper permitting the water to flow instantly to the operated sprinkler(s). Reliable's Model 61 Accelerator is described in greater detail in Bulletins 320 and 322. Valve Description 1. Rated working pressure 175 psi (12.1 bar). 2. They also serve as a means of setting and resetting the dry pipe valve prior to and after operation as well as allowing testing of the alarm devices without causing the system to operate. The Model D Basic Trim Set is shown in Fig. 4 (The electric sprinkler alarm switch is not part of the trim set and must be separately ordered.) This trim set provides the air supply, drain, priming level and alarm connections. An alarm test valve, which al- lows the alarm devices to be tested without operat- ing the dry pipe valve, is included. The basic trim set includes all items such as ball drip valves, pressure gauges, etc which are needed to enable proper dry pipe valve operation. The basic trim set is available in either black or gal- vanized in one of three forms: loose, segmentally as- sembled trim or factory trimmed on the valve. Two additional trimming attachments are offered: the priming chamber attachment and the fill line at- tachment. The priming chamber attachment al- lows the priming level to be maintained while the system remains pressurized. The fill line attach- mentprovides asource ofwater for maintaining the prime level. PIPE AND FITTINGS When you specify Allied Schedule-10/Schedule-40 sprinkler pipe you get a UL listed and FM approved product. Although these products do not require separate approvals, Schedule-10lSchedule-40 gives you the extra quality assurance you demand. Our Sch-1 D (1 ~/a"- 8") pipe and Sch-40 (1 "- 2~/z") pipe have passed the same thorough lab testing as our other listed pipe products, and receive periodic mill inspections from both UL and FM agents to ensure consistent quality. p Galvanized Pipe Schedule-t0lSchedule-40 product can be "hot-dip" galvanized to meet FM requirements for dry systems in accordance with the zinc coating specifications of ASTM A-123. O Superior Coating Our advanced formula mill coating offers a clean, durable surface. It is also paint-ready for custom color applications without special preparation. The internal surface of all Allied Tube & Conduit Fire Sprinkler pipe products up to 4.500" in diameter is coated with our new Antibacterial Formula, "ABFII". In scientific laboratory tests, ABFII proved to have superior resistance to microbial colonization of pipe walls, thereby inhibiting or possibly preventing the onset of Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) upon installation and the first 25 flushes of the fire sprinkler system.* O American Made Meets "Buy American" requirement and is available through distributors in the USA, Canada, Mexico and Latin America. O Specifications & Approvals Schedule-10/Schedule-40 pipe are in compliance with the following: ASTM A-135, and NFPA 13. Precision machined bolt holes, key and mating surfaces assure concentricity and flatness to provide exact fit-up with flanged, lug, and wafer styles of pipe system equipment. A specially designed gasket provides aleak-tight seal on both the pipe and the mating flange face. The 14" thru 24' sizes of the Gruvlok Fig. 7012 Flange are cast in four segments. A sleek profile gasket design allows quick and easy assembly of the Gruvlok Flange onto the pipe. All Gruvlok Fig. 7012 Flanges have designed-in anti-rotation tangs which bite into and grip the sides of the pipe grooves to provide a secure, rigid connection. The Gruvlok Fig. 7012 Flange requires the use of a steel adapter insert when used against rubber faced surfaces, wafer/lug design valves and serrated or irregular sealing surfaces. In copper systems a phenolic adapter insert is required, in place of the steel adapter insert. The pressure of the compressed gas is reduced by the regulator to the level required by the dry pipe, deluge or preaction system. The Reliable automatic pressure maintenance device will maintain a constant pressure in the system regardless of pressure fluctuations in the compressed gas source. The strainer prevents any foreign matter in the gas from traveling to the regulator and check valve and inter- fering with their normal operation. The check valve pre- vents reverse flow so that water cannot reach the regulators after the dry pipe or deluge valve operates. The shutoff valves permit the servicing of the strainer and regulator without shutting down the sprinkler sys- tem. The bypass valve permits the rapid restoration of the required system pressure after service or operation. The bypass valve must be closed and the shutoff valves open for proper automatic operation. Face to Face Dimensions: 11'/4" (286mm) Pressure Rating: Adjustable Range: 5psi - to - 50 psi (0,3 bar - to - 3,4 bar) Maximum Inlet Pressure: 175 psi (12 bar) Note: 1 bar .100 kPa Models B-1 and B-2 The Models B-1 and 6-2 Devices are designed for use in conjunction with Reliable Model A or Model B tankless air compressors which do not have a pressure control switch to maintain the correct pressure in a dry pipe or deluge valve system. By wiring the compressor motor to the electrical pressure switch of the Reliable Model B-1 or B-2 Automatic Pressure Maintenance Device, the compressor is controlled by the selected pressure in the dry pipe or deluge valve system. A drop in the air pressure closes the pressure switch, activating the compressor. When the air pressure is re- stored to the pre-adjusted setting, the pressure switch opens, stopping the compressor. The electrical pres- sure switch is equipped with an unloader valve which automatically bleeds off the compressor outlet pressure (through the copper tubing) each time the pressure switch opens. This protects the compressor motor from overload at the next startup. Like the Model A-2 Device, the Model B-1 or B-2 has a strainer for contamination control and a check valve to prevent reverse water flow. The bypass valve and shut- off valves are identical in configuration and function as with the Model A-2 Device. Likewise, the bypass valve must be closed and the shutoff valves open for proper automatic operation. See Figures 2,4,5, and 6. See Fig 7 for two switch, one conduit wiring. Testing The operation of the pressure alarm switch should be tested upon completion of installation and periodically thereafter in accordance with the applicable NFPA codes and standards and/or the authority having jurisdiction (manufacturer recommends quarterly or more frequently). Wet System Method l: When using PS10 and control unit with retard -connect PS10 into alarm port piping on the input side of retard chamber and electrically connect PS 10 to wntrol unit that provides a retard to compensate for surges. Insure that no unsupervised shut-off valves are present between the alarm check valve and PS 10. Method 1: When using the PS 10 for local bell application or with a wntrol that does not provide a retard feature - the PS 10 must be installed on the alarm outlet side of the retard chamber of the sprinkler system. Testing: Accomplished by opening the inspector's end-of--line test valve. Allow time to compensate for system or control retard. Note: Method 2 is not applicable for remote station service use, i f there is an unsupervised shut-off valve between the alarm check valve and the PS 10. Wet System With Ezcess Pressure Connect P510 into alarm port piping extending from alarm check valve. Retard provisions are not required. Insure that no unsupervised shut-off valves are present between the alarm check valve and the PS 10. Testrng: Accomplished by opening the water by-pass test valve or the inspector's end-of--line test valve. When using end-of--line test, allow time for excess pressure to bleed off. Dry System Connect PS 10 into alarm port piping that extends from the intermediate chamber of the alarm check valve. Install on the outlet side of the in-line check valve of the alarm port piping. Insure that no unsupervised shut-off valves are present between the alarm check valve and the PS 10. Testing.' Accomplished by opening the water by-pass test valve. Run wires through an approved conduit connector and aiTix the connector to the device. A NEMA-4 rated conduit fitting is required for outdoor use. 4. Connect the wires to the appropriate terminal connections for the service intended. See Figures 2,4,5,6, and 8 Adjustment And Testieg The operation of the pressure supervisory switch should be tested upon completion of installation and periodically thereafler in accordance with the applicable NFPA codes and standards and/or the authority having jurisdiction (manufacturer recommends quarterly or more fi+equently). Nore: Testing the PS40 may activate other system connected devices. The use of a Potter BVL (see product bulletin 8900067 for details) is recommended to facilitate setting and testing of the PS40 pressure switch. When a BVL (bleeder valve) is used, the pressure to the switch can be isolated and bled from the exhaust port on the BVL without effecting the supervisory pressure of the entire system. See Fig. 3 The operation point of the PS40 Pressure Switch can be adjusted to any point between 10 and 60 PSl (0,7 - 4,11 BAR) by fuming the adjustment knob{s) clockwise to raise the actuation point and counter clockwise to lower the actuation point. In the cast of the PS40-2, both switches operate independent of each other. Each switch may be independently adjusted to actuate at any point across the switch adjustment range. Initial adjustment can be made with a visual reference from the top of the adjustment knob across to the printed scale on the switch bracket. Final adjustments should be verified with a pressure gauge. It is UL Listed and FM Approved for use on steel pipe; schedules 10 through 40, sizes 2" thru 8" (50mm thru 200mm). LPC approved sizes are 2" thru 8" (50mm thru 200mm). The unit may also be used as a sectional waterflow detector on large systems. The unit contains two single pole, double throw, snap action switches and an adjustable, instantly recycling pneumatic re- tard. The switches are actuated when a flow of 10 gallons per minute (38 LPM) or more occurs downstream of the device. The flow condition must exist for a period of time necessary to overcome the selected retard period. ENCLOSURE: The unit is enclosed in a general purpose, die- cast housing. The cover is held in place with two tamper resis- tant screws which require a special key for removal. A field in- stallable cover tamper switch is available as an option which may be used to indicate unauthorized removal of the cover. See bulletin no. 5400775 for installation instructions of this switch. INSTALLATION: See Fig.2 These devices may be mounted on horizontal or vertical pipe. On horizontal pipe they should be installed on the top side of the pipe where they will be accessible. The units should not be in- stalledwithin 6" (15cm) of a fitting which changes the direction of the waterflow or within 24" (60 cm) of a valve or drain. Drain the system and drill a hole in the pipe using a circular saw in a slow speed drill. The 2" (50mm) and 2 1/2" (65mm) devices require a hole with a diameter of 1 1/4" + 1/8" - 1/16" (33mm t2mm). All other sizes require a hole with a diameter of 2" t1/8" (50mm t2mm). Clean the inside pipe of all growth or other material fora dis- tance equal to the pipe diameter on either side of the hole. Roll the vane so that it may be inserted into the hole; do not bend or crease it. Insert the vane so that the arrow on the saddle points in the direction of the waterflow. Install the saddle strap and tighten nuts alternately to an eventual 50 ft-Ibs. (68 n-m) of torque (see Fig. 2). The vane must not rub the inside of the pipe or bind in any way. Due to the possibility of unintended discharges caused by pressure surges, trapped air, or short retard times, waterflow switches that are monitoring wet pipe sprinkler systems should not be used as the sole initiating device to discharge AFFF, deluge, or chemical suppression systems. TESTING The frequency of inspection and testing for the model VSR-F and its associated protective monitoring system should be in accordance with applicable NFPA Codes and Standards and/or the authority having jurisdiction (manufacturer recommends quarterly or more frequently). If provided, the inspector's test valve, that is usually located at the end of the most remote branch tine, should always be used for test purposes. If there are no provisions for testing the operation of the flow detection device on the system, application of the VSR-F is not recommended or advisable. A minimum flow of 10 gpm (38 Lpm) is required to activate this device. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please advise the person responsible for testing of the fire protection system that this system must be tested in accordance with the testing instructions.
