20140299 Late Public Comments on Notice of Application
Tami Merriman From:Tony Engler [pixfixtony@gmail.com] Sent:Wednesday, January 21, 2015 4:08 AM To:Tami Merriman Subject:Re: Tractor Supply Project Permit Application, f you oppose this new store, copy & paste this letter and email it to: Tami Merriman, Associate Planner, Email: tamim@ci.yelm.wa.usJanuary 20, 2015 City of Yelm Yelm City Hall 105 Yelm Avenue West Yelm, WA 98597 To: Tami Merriman, Associate Planner, Email: tamim@ci.yelm.wa.us Re: Tractor Supply Project Permit Application, January 5, 2015 Dear Ms. Merriman, I hereby submit my comments regarding the application by Tractor Supply to demolish Del’s Farm Supply and construct a larger warehouse size Tractor Supply business in Yelm. I request a Public Hearing on this matter. I request the Community Development Department and the Planning Department deny this application and to deny any building Permits for Del's Farm Supply and/orTractor Supply to build a big box store in Yelm. This size business would knock out many locally owned and managed businesses in Yelm and make Yelm even more of a “Ghost Town” with empty malls and buildings all over town. Just like when Walmart opened, Radio Shack closed, QFC closed and left a large empty building for years, and eventually Yelm Hardware Store had to close and is still empty. I would like to see Yelm start to revive and create a uniquely distinct look of culture, to not look any other “cookie-cutter” big box stores and strip mall towns that you can find anywhere lacking character, integrity and identity. Some of the businesses that would be threatened by a large warehouse farm, tool, lawn and garden supply, clothing, outdoor power, livestock and pet store are but not limited to: Sunbirds Yelm Farm and Pet Supplies 1 Gordon’s Garden Center Yelm Food Cooperative (that is housed inside Gordon’s Garden Center) Tools West J & I Power Equipment Mountain Lumber Jason’s Nursery Mckenna Garden Center …for starters These local businesses bank in town, spend money in town, and employ a lot of people who live here and spend their money here. Another large warehouse store from outside the area will not keep its money here, nor spend its money here. Tractor Supply income will go directly out of town to corporate accounts. I do not want another large corporate owned warehouse in my town. Our local businesses cannot afford this, and I don’t want it. Many people in the Yelm, Rainier area want more locally owned businesses, local production, local small farms, and local development of what people need and want. We do not want Yelm reduced to only big box warehouse stores stocked from China. We deserve a better quality of life. The City of Yelm made a big mistake not being business friendly to “Ice Chips”. You now have a chance to start to redeem yourself with how you handle things with Tractor Supply. It is not the right kind of growth because it would be destructive to the local stores where we love to shop. We want to keep our locally owned stores where service is great and questions are answered. The City of Yelm must have a Public Hearing on this. If you accept the Tractor Supply application without a Public Hearing to the detriment of the above list of local businesses, the present government of Yelm will be in serious trouble with the citizens of Yelm, the people who live, work and shop here in Yelm. My vote is for the City of Yelm to make a commitment to creating a strong local economy not dependent upon corporate interests. Maybe this would be a good time for all of us to remember Article 1 Declaration of Rights Section 1 from the Washington State Constitution: POLITICAL POWER is inherent in the people, and governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, and are established to protect and maintain individual rights. Thank you, (Sign your name and full address) NOTE: Must be submitted by today, Tuesday, January 20, 2015 by 5pm. 2 Tami Merriman From:Shelley Brown [swbrown32@hotmail.com] Sent:Wednesday, January 21, 2015 10:56 AM To:Tami Merriman Subject:Strongly oppose new warehouse store City of Yelm Yelm City Hall 105 Yelm Avenue West Yelm, WA 98597 To: Tami Merriman, Associate Planner, Email: tamim@ci.yelm.wa.us Re: Tractor Supply Project Permit Application, January 5, 2015 Dear Ms. Merriman, I hereby submit my comments regarding the application by Tractor Supply to demolish Del’s Farm Supply and construct a larger warehouse size Tractor Supply business in Yelm. This is someone I know personally and respect. I expressed my concerns about the potential "big box" coming to Yelm issue and he clarified some points for me. After understanding the situation better, I realized that there were many reasons to believe that Tractor Supply will not pose the kind of concern to local small businesses that I originally thought it would be. I should have had my facts correct before emailing you with my letter of concern. I apologize for any inconvenience that my letter may have posed.
