RE: Yelm Retail Center PROJECT LOCATION: 1301 Yelm Ave E, Yelm, WA 98597
PROJECT PARCEL NUMBER(S): 22730140300 LAND USE CASE NUMBER: 20150178
Dear Ms. Merriman,
You requested comments on this project. Here are mine.

When I first arrived in Yelm in May 2008, I lived in at 1301 Yelm Ave E, Yelm, WA 98597 for more than a
year and a half. The traffic was extremely congested. On weekends it doubled or tripled, so that it was often
st
difficult to emerge from the driveway onto the street. And it took 45 mins. to go one and a half miles from 1
St. to Five Corners and vice versa. Needless to say with that amount of traffic the air was foul from gasoline
fumes and the noise level was stressful.
Only a stones throat away a large apartment complex has been built and an even bigger box store is being built
at Five Corners by Del’s. Another big box store and a fast food restaurant at this already environmentally
challenged location would only exacerbate the air pollution and traffic bottle-necks.
According to the dictionary “planning” entails viewing the present situation and estimating what could go
wrong in the immediate and long term futures. That hardly seems Yelm’s approach.
Therefore, an accurate, unbiased Environmental Threshold assessment is vital to the health and sanity of the
people who live and work in the area.
I notice also that a small, local business “Ice Chips” was denied access, which makes one wonder whom the city
council is serving – the people, or big corporations….
Respectfully submitted,
Roberto Mazzarella
