WA 98507 (360) 352-4122 Prepared by: Susan Buis March 4,1998 t INTRODUCTION BUFFER RESTORATION PLAN Th1S plan describes measures to reduce human impacts and restore native vegetatiOn to a partially disturbed forested upland buffer at the Nisqually Estates constmction site on SR 507, within the Yelm city limits II EXISTING CONDITIONS FunClions The buffer serves as a visual and aural barrier between the new housing development and a neighboring home Vegetation The native vegetation on and Immediately adjacent to the disturbance includes the following species Common name Big leaf maple Douglas~flI Garry (Oregon wiute) oak Red alder Ind1an plum Beaked hazelnut Vine maple TaU Oregon grape Sala1 Snowberry Bald hip rose Western sword fern Trailing blackberry Scientific name Acer macrophyllum Pseudotsuga menziesii Quercus ganyana Alnus rubra Oemleria cerasiformls Cory/us cornuta Acer circinatum Berberis aquifolium Gaultheria shallon Symphoncarpos albus Rosa gymnocarpa Polystichum munitu/n Rubus ursinus The dominant non-native plant on the site is Scot's broom (Cytisus scoparius) Soil According to the Soil Survey of Thurston County, Washington (USDA Soil Conservation Service 1990), the soil here is Spanaway gravelly sandy loam. This is a very deep, somewhat excesslvely drained soil occurnng 011 terraces. Hydrology This 1S an upland site No evidence of saturated soils was found Existing Impacts Approximately 3600 square feet afforested upland buffer between the constructiOn site and a neighbormg home were d1sturbed by a bulldozer Vegetatlon was removed but the solis remained. The disturbance is a narrow swath about 120 feet long and 1 vanes in width from 20 to 40 feet A large big leaf maple is still standing 011 the east slde of the swath and mature Douglas-firs stand on the west side The site is partIally shaded III. BUFFER RESTORATION PLAN GoAl.s AND OBJECl1VES The goal of the restoratlon is to restore Visual and aural buffering between the new housing development and the neighboring home Planting native trees and shrubs tn the disturbed area and erectmg a six foot sohd fence along the length of the disturbed area will accomplish this goal SI PLANT NATIVE TREEs AND SHRUBS A vanety of native upland species appropriate to a dry forested site will be planted The spec1es list follows in Table 1 The consultant may adjust species quantities (but not total quantitIes) and plant SIzes to adapt to current availability in the native plant market. Mulch will suppress the growth of weeds, hold IDOlsture lU this droughty soil in summer, add nutrients to the soil, reduce surface erosion, and serve other useful functions. In particular, mulch will help reduce the amount of Scot's broom gernunating on site, which will aid the native plants m their establishment. IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE The planted trees and shrubs may be nursery-grown barefoot seedlings if the installation lS completed before March 31, or contamer seedlings lfthe plants are installed between Aprill and December 1 We reconunend mstalhng the project as soon as possible, to help insure plant establishment before the first summer drought.
