A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YELM. WASHINTON, IN
SUPPORT OF THE RUNAWAY ALLIANCE AND REQUESTING THE STATE OF WASHINGTON
LEGISLATURE TO ENACT LEGISLATION TO ASSIST PARENTS AND COMMUNITIES IN
DEALING WITH RUNAWAY CHILDREN
WHEREAS, the Runaway Alliance is an organization composed of parents who have had
a child runaway from home; and
WHEREAS, current state laws hold parents responsible for the actions of their children
until age 18, but provide parents with no authority to restrain children from running away from
home or to require children to recieve drug or alcohol treatment when needed; and
WHEREAS, the absence of legal protections for parents and families has significant
negative consequences for both the individuals affected and the community at large, including
the exposure of children to danger, crime, and abuse, the breakup of family units, and the
creation of financial burdens upon the taxpayers of the state through increased costs for law
enforcement, welfare, and medical care; and
WHEREAS, the Runaway Alliance has proposed that state laws be enacted that will
address the problems associated with runaway children; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Yelm supports the goals and objectives of the ,
Runaway Alliance:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
YELM that the goals and objectives of the Runaway Alliance are hereby endorsed and the
Legislature. of the State of Washington is called upon to enact legislation consistent with those
goals and objectives in order to protect the children of our communities, to restore parental
authority within the family, and to decrease the burden placed upon communities due to the
negative consequences associated with runaway children.
