Criminal Justice Funding
WHEREAS,' The Washington State Legislature recognized the need for additional funding
support far local criminal justice agencies when they enacted the City/County Criminal Justice
Assistance Act; and
WHEREAS, The cities and towns have used the recently provided criminal justice assistance
funds to improve the criminal justice system at the local level; and
WHEREAS, The criminal justice system continues to be adversely impacted by crime, drugs,
and gangs; and
WHEREAS, All cities are not the same and urban cities have vastly different needs and
resources than lesser populated cities and towns yet the citizenry expectations may be the same;

WHEREAS, Many municipalities have exhausted their fiscal capacities and do not have adequate
resources to meet the challenges of the increasing demand for criminal justice services; and
WHEREAS, The provision of the additional criminal justice assistance funds sunset in 1993;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Yelm Cit~T Council
requests that the Legislature continue the criminal justice assistance funding, extending the
authority for all counties to impose aone-tenth of one percent increased sales tax, for criminal
justice purposes, including domestic violence community advocates who form a critical piece of
an effective coordinated response to this epidemic of violence in our cities, and urges the
Legislature to remove the non-supplanting language from current law; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Ye lm City Couny i 1 requests that
the Legislature enact legislation that gives cities and towns additional local option funding
sources for local criminal justice programs.
