PROJECTS TOUR
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2007
1. Councilmember Miller, nominated as Mayor Pro-Tem in the absence of the Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tem,
called the meeting to order aboard the bus on-route to the Current Projects Tour.
2. Present: Don Miller, Joe Baker, Pat Fetterly. Mike McGowan and John Thompson Staff: Shelly Badger,
Stephanie Ray, Grant Beck, Jim Gibson, Cindy Teixeira, Tim Peterson, Tanya Robacker Lori Mossman
and Janine Schnepf. Excused; Mayor Ron Harding, Bob Isom and Russ Hendrickson.
3. Agenda Approval—Agenda was approved.
4. Presentations
a. Public Safety Building. Stephanie Ray provided a copy of the layout for the building and she and Todd
Stancil walked the group through the building pointing out several special features of the building.
Robin Bailey was introduced as the leader on the construction. Building was designed to meet the
needs of the City for the next 20 years with an opening date of approximately February 2008. Current
plans are to house the Court, Police Department, Council Chambers and conference room space.
b. Stevens Street West- Labor Day opening is scheduled for Stevens Street from First Street to Edwards
as reported by Stephanie Ray. Councilmember McGowan suggested a traffic emphasis (25 mph) on
West Road using the electronic sign to coincide with the opening of school the first week in September.
C. Longmire Park-The group was able to walk the grounds of the park to view the 3 Little League fields,
Volleyball court and Soccer/Football field as Tim Peterson described the progress of the Park's
completion. Water tanks are filled daily for irrigation of the new grass.
d. Yelm Ave West-Jim Gibson narrated the tour from Longmire Park to Killion Road West, site of Phase
1 of the Local Improvement District realignment. He indicated the new street connectors to help
alleviate congestion on Yelm Ave from Burnett to 103`d and Grove, as well as to the future Y-2
Connector. Phase 2 will see Killion widened to 3 lanes with tree lined and lighted sidewalks on both
sides.
5. Mayor/Council Initiatives—Council and staff returned to City Hall via Tahoma Blvd, site of the future
Thurston Highland and Tahoma Terra Master Plan Communities.
Councilmember Thompson reported from Transportation Policy Board that limited space and high costs
at the Tacoma Port is causing businesses to move elsewhere including the Port of Olympia. He is
suggesting moving forward with strategy to develop the Yelm Industrial area to take advantage of
business's search for appropriate space.
