AN ORDINANCE UPDATING THE YELM SIGN CODE, CHAPTER 15.24

WHEREAS, in 20~3, the City Council updated the Yelm Sign Code after review
by an ad hoc committee, the Planning Commission, and City Council; and
WHEREAS, the Yelm Chamber of Commerce works closely with the City of Yelm
on business related issues and suggested the City review several areas of the
updated sign code for possible amendment; and
WHEREAS, the Community Development Department reviewed the suggested
changes and proposed several amendments to address many of the
suggestions; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor presented the proposed changes to the members of the
Yelm Chamber and solicited feedback from the membership; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has held a duly advertised public hearing on the
proposed udpated;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YELM DOES
HEREBY ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
NOW, THEREFORE, THE YELM CITY COUNCIL DOES ORDAIN AS
FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Section 15.24.170 YMC is hereby amended.
15.24.170 Buildings facing on two parallel streets or corner.
A. Single- or multiple-occupancy buildings whose premises extend
through a block to face onto parallel streets with customer
entrances on each street are permitted signs per street frontage as
per YMC 15.24.190; provided, however, that each sign is Iocated
on different street frontages and are separated more than ~BA~-50
feet measured in a cFr~inh4 line alonq the buildinq frontaqe between
the signs. provided that if the buildin4 frontaQe is less than 50 feet.
the sians shall be located no closer than the center aoint of each
buildinp face.
Section 2. Section 15.24.197 YMC is hereby amended.
15.24.197 Community Signs
A. A single, joint sign listing Yelm civic organizations may be installed
bv the Yelm Chamber of Commerce on property owned by a civic
organization or the City of Yelm or on propertv subiect to_ an
easement benefittinq Chamber of Commerce. The sign shall be
limited to a-A-12 square feet if a freestanding sign less than 8 feet in
height and ~8-21 square feet if a monument sign.
B. Community Events within the City of Yelm sponsored by the City of
Yelm or a civic organization may be allowed on property owned by
a civic organization or the City of Yelm, provided that the sign is
less than ~8-21 square feet in area, is erected no earlier than three
weeks prior to the advertised event and is removed within two days
of the end of the event.
C. Signs located on the outfield fences of baseball fields owned and
operated by civic organizations are allowed, provided that such
signs are primarily oriented towards the ballfield and are not
intended to advertise off-site.
D. Citv directional locator si4ns of a standard desian and installed bv
the Citv of Yelm shall be allowed in the aublic street riaht of wavs.
Directonal locator sipns mav be installed to direct traffic to:
1. Municipal buildinas and services.
2. Communitv buildinas and services.
3. Master Planned Communities.
Section 3. Section 15.24.197 YMC is hereby amended.

Section 3. Severability. If any provisions of this Ordinance or its application to
any person or circumstance is held invalid, the remainder of the Ordinance or the
application of the provision to other persons or circumstances is not affected.
Section 4. The Ordinance shall be in full force and effect and after its passage,
approval, and publication as provided by law.
