2008 RETREAT MINUTES
SATURDAY, FEB. 2, 2008
9 A.M., PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY
The meeting was opened at 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Yelm Public Works Facility, 901
Rhoton Road.
Present at the meeting were Mayor Ron Harding and Councilmembers Don Miller, Joe Baker,
Bob Isom, Mike McGowan, Pat Fetterly, John Thompson, and Russ Hendrickson. City
Administrator Shelly Badger was also present.
Mayor Initiatives:
Mayor Harding and Council reviewed opportunities for capital projects that could be studied
further this year and designated for completion. Those projects include:
• Recreation Center
Council considered options with building at Yelm City Park, including redesign of the
park, and opportunities to offer recreational programs by contracting with Yelm Community
Services. More detailed information will be presented at upcoming Study Sessions.
• Longmire Park
Discussed playground equipment, which will be in place by park's opening
• Hobson House -after considering the following 3 options:
1. leave vacant,
2. demolish,
3. conduct minor renovations for short-term use by Historical Museum,
Consensus was to move forward with minor renovations for short-term use by
the Yelm Prairie Historical Society for the museum.
• Public Works site on First St. S. -more information was requested on the following 2
options:
1. public parking lot
2. continue use as public works storage facility with minor upgrade
• Yelm Library
Yelm Timberland Library's lease expires in less than five years and Council discussed
city's role and responsibilities concerning project.
1. City is interested in maintaining current support
2. Timberland Foundation is to lead the effort for new library space with
participation of interested community members and elected officials, including
fundraising efforts
Council reviewed goals adopted in 2003, as provided in Council packets, including:
• transportation
• economic development
• water rights
• community outreach
• sign code
• sidewalks
• Yelm-Roy Prairie Line
Council Initiatives:
Councilman John Thompson brought forward the idea of a possible facilitated meeting in the
future for a yearly planning meeting. It would be an opportunity to evaluate the city's direction with
the council and department heads.
Council discussed and recommended routine citywide training on customer service.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:20 p.m.
