443 SR 507 Speed Limit

A RESOLUTION REPEALING RESOLUTION No. 440 AND REQUESTING THAT THE
WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION LOWER THE SPEED
LIMIT ON S.R. 507 WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS.
WHEREAS, the Washington State Department of Transportation establishes
speed limits on State Route 507 within the corporate City limits; and
WHEREAS, the speed limit on State Route 507 between the intersection of Yelm
Avenue and 1 st Street and Mill Road is currently 25 MPH and the speed limit from Mill
Road to the City limits' is 55 MPH; and
WHEREAS, the sudden transition from 55 MPH to 25 MPH creates conflict and
an unsafe driving condition; and
WHEREAS, the Hawks Landing and Nisqually Estates subdivisions contain 160
homes, the traffic from which enters State Route 507 at three intersections; and
WHEREAS, WSDOT had previously requested that the City of Yelm concur with
a proposed change of the speed limit to 45 MPH;. and
WHEREAS, the City Council on November 12, 2002, adopted Resolution No.
440, which requested that WSDOT change the speed limit on SR 507 to 35 MPH; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of WSDOT not to change the speed limit of a State
Highway within City limits without concurrence by the City Council and, without that
concurrence, the speed limit will remain 55 MPH on SR 507; and
WHEREAS, WSDOT has indicated to the City that it will re-examine the speed
limit on SR 507 after the frontage improvements at the Hawks Landing subdivision are
complete;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YELM, WASHINGTON
DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: .
1. Resolution No. 440 is hereby repealed.
2. The City of Yelm requests the Washington State Department of Transportation
lower the speed limit on State Route 507 between milepost 26.94 and 27.94 from
55/MPH to 45 MPH, provided that the speed limit is re-examined when the
fró 1tage improvements at the Hawks Landing subdivision are complete.
