458 Initiative 912 Opposition

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCil OF THE CITY OF YELM,
WASHINGTON, EXPRESSING opposition of the State of Washington Initiative
912, which would repeal the motor vehicle fuel tax rate increase enacted by
the 2005 session of the legislature for state-wide transportation purposes.
The 2005 enactment provides that the motor vehicle fuel tax rate would
increase by three cents per gallon more in July 2005, by three cents per gallon
more in 2006, by two cents per gallon more in 2007, and by one and one-half
cent per gallon more in 2008.
WHEREAS, State of Washington Initiative 912 (1-912) has been certified for the
November 8, 2005 ballot; and
WHEREAS, voter approval of 1-912 would repeal the most recent increase to the
motor vehicle fuel tax rate of nine and one-half cents; and
WHEREAS, approval of 1-912 would stop scheduled transportation funding for
over 270 projects that will make roads and bridges safer; and
WHEREAS, approval of 1-912 would take away the funding for easing the choke
points on our current road system; and
WHEREAS, approval of 1-912 would interfere with the Washington State
legislature's 16 year plan to take care of some of Washington's most critical
transportation needs; and
WHEREAS, approval of 1-912 would prevent its citizens from enioying a better
quality of life; and
WHEREAS, approval of 1-912 would eliminate $33,000,000 now designated by
the State legislature for funding the design and right-of-way for the City of Yelm's SR
510 Yelm loop Transportation Improvement Project; and
WHEREAS, approval of 1-912 would eliminate annual revenue distributions to the
City of Yelm of approximately $16,900 that would be used for street improvements;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCil OF THE CITY OF
YELM AS FOllOWS:
The City of Yelm hereby declares their opposition of the State of Washington
Initiative 912 and urges voters to vote "No" on Initiative 912.
