And PORT OF OLYMPIA
SPECIAL MEETING NOTES
WEDNESDAY, MAY 23,2001,6:00 P.M.
Mayor Rivas called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and introduced City Council
members and Port Commissioners. Mayor Rivas explained that sponsors contracting the
Yelm Industrial Area Market & Development Assessment included the Port of Olympia,
Thurston County Economic Development Council, Yelm Chamber of Commerce and the
City of Yelm. Mayor Rivas thanked the Port of Olympia for hosting dinner.
Elected officials present included Mayor Adam Rivas, City Councilmembers Don Miller,
John Thompson, Glen Cunningham and JW Foster and Port of Olympia Commissioners
Steve Pottle, Bob VanSchoorl and Jeff Dickison.
Project sponsor representatives present included Gene Heuschel, Yelm Chamber of
Commerce, Dennis Matson, Thurston County Economic Development Council, and Nick
Handy, Port of Olympia.
Prior to taking a short refreshment break, Commissioner Pottle requested that audience
members introduce themselves and share their specific interest in the assessment.
When the meeting resumed, Eric Hovee provided an overview of the assessment
process, findings, and conclusions of the draft report prepared by E.D. Hovee &
Company. The process included an evaluation of data from a business survey, regional
and local stakeholders' interviews, regional and local demographic and economic
outlook and a comparable industrial sites and business parks inventory.
Three alternative scenarios were identified for consideration based upon the market and
development assessment with none of the three emerging as a clear choice. However, a
projected need for increased space for local business expansion was identified along
with the critical importance of both the rail line and the Y -3 alternative corridor.
Ongoing plans are to continue discussion of the report and scenarios to establish a
preference, and preparation of a final report incorporating comments received to serve
as the basis for a strategy.
