430 IT BALLOT SUPPORT
CITY OF YELM
RESOLUTION NO. _430
A RESOLUTION supporting the Intercity Transit (IT) ballot proposal, Proposition 1 - Sales and
Use Tax, for an increase of the local sales tax by 0.3 percent on the September 17,2002 election.
WHEREAS, IT had to cut 39% of its fixed route transit service in 2000 when the Motor
Vehicle Excise Tax was eliminated; and
WHEREAS, 14 of the agency's 38 routes and most service to rural Thurston County were
eliminated; and
WHEREAS, to maintain this reduced level of service, IT will use reserve funds and
eventually force additional service reductions of 30% by 2004; and
WHEREAS, the proposed tax increase would provide approximately $8 million annually
and would restore some fixed route service as well as some special service for persons with
disabilities; and
WHEREAS, service improvements would include restoration of all day and Saturday service
to Yelm; Corresponding expansion of Dial- A-Lift service for persons with disabilities; Vanpool and
ridermatch program growth;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE YELM CITY COUNCIL
DOES HEREBY RECOMMEND THAT THE CITIZENS SUPPORT TIlE SEPTEMBER 17,
2002 BALLOT PROPOSAL.
